FAQ

In mathematics, a fraction is a number that represents a part of a whole. It consists of a numerator and a denominator. The numerator represents the number of equal parts of a whole, while the denominator is the total number of parts that make up said whole. For example, in the fraction of 3/8, the numerator is 3, and the denominator is 8.

To add fractions, you need a common denominator. Multiply the numerators and denominators of all fractions by the product of the denominators of each fraction. Then add the numerators and keep the common denominator. For example, 3/4 + 1/6 = (3×6)/(4×6) + (1×4)/(6×4) = 18/24 + 4/24 = 22/24 = 11/12.

To simplify a fraction, find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator, then divide both by that number. For example, to simplify 8/12, the GCD of 8 and 12 is 4, so 8/12 = (8÷4)/(12÷4) = 2/3.

To convert a decimal to a fraction, determine the power of 10 that the decimal extends to. Use that power of 10 as the denominator, enter each number to the right of the decimal point as the numerator, and simplify. For example, 0.1234 has 4 decimal places, so it becomes 1234/10000, which simplifies to 617/5000.
